Can only be used over short distances of connection, but ideal for connecting set-top boxes, games consoles and other digital sources to an amp. Can also be used in conjunction with HDMI cables to split audio and video signals. Low-quality optical cables can restrict data rates - degrading audio signal and introducing jitter.

For a premium digital audio connection  consider using S/PDIF which many audiophiles consider to be better quality still.
